An award-winning team!

Kingfisher Buddies’ Community Pathfinders, Debra Pierson and Sandra Graham, were shortlisted for the national Margaret Butterworth Award 2019 for excellence in dementia care and at the awards ceremony on 11th July in London they were delighted to be commended with distinction.

This annual award, presented by Dementia Pathfinders, is in its 15th year and aims to recognise the achievements of front line staff who give of themselves generously to improve the lives of people with dementia.

During her lifetime, Margaret Butterworth worked energetically and creatively to improve care for people with dementia, their friends and families. Margaret engaged with the complexity of the modern care world with a quiet but persistent voice. She honoured and shared good practice and believed that simple acts of the heart made all the difference.

“Debra and I were thrilled to have our work recognised in this way,” said Sandra. “Most important to us is the difference our Kingfisher Buddies service is making in Sandwell. Hearing some of the testimonies sent in to support our nominations really brought that home. To say we were both a little emotional would be an understatement!”

“We are very proud of what Kingfisher Buddies is achieving,” continued Debra. “In addition to visiting people at home to provide support and guidance, we also run a number of popular weekly groups for people living with dementia and their family carers and are seeing lives being improved for the better as a result.

“We organise a varied programme of meaningful activities that are successfully engaging those with dementia. We are also seeing some great friendships developing amongst the family carers who are providing support for each other and meeting up outside of our groups too.”

Kingfisher Buddies is a service provided by Agewell in partnership with Dementia Pathfinders. The 3-year project is funded by The National Lottery Community Fund.
