Mr Edwards has been blind since birth and his wife has failing eyesight and is now registered blind herself.
The couple were living in a three bedroom house in Wednesbury but, over the years, it had become in much need of refurbishment. While Mrs Edwards was keen to downsize to a home more suitable to their current needs, Mr Edwards was determined to stay where he was.
He was also adamant that he didn’t want Sandwell Homes to carry out any planned improvement work.
Through Agewell’s peer mentoring scheme, Agewell Chair Edna Barker, became good friends with the couple. As Edna had been through a similar house move herself, she was able to offer first hand expert advice. She advised them on their options and helped them to make the right decision for the future.
“I was able to chat with them about the work which could be done to their current house to improve it or whether they would be happier moving to a new home,” explains Edna.
“In the end they decided to downsize to a bungalow in Wednesbury and I supported them throughout the process.”
Sandwell Homes funded their removal costs and provided new carpets to make their new home even more welcoming and the couple are now very happy.
