Working with University of Birmingham

A new Good Practice Guide, containing top tips for managing the crisis of older people’s emergency admissions to hospital, has now been sent to every hospital trust in the country.

Based on the findings from a 2-year national research project conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Birmingham, this new resource entitled ‘Who Knows Best?’ uses the experiences and views of older people to understand and prevent avoidable hospital admissions.

The project was overseen by a national ‘Sounding Board’ of organisations including Agewell, Age UK, the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services, the NHS Confederation and the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE).

Agewell are delighted to have been involved with this project, which is thought to be the first study in the UK to explore the issues of ‘inappropriate’ hospital admissions from the perspective of older people themselves. In total, 104 older people or their families were interviewed.

Agewell members made up the project’s Older People’s Reference Group which ensured that older people’s voices were included at all stages of the research, from discussions around the kinds of questions to be asked in the interviews, to testing  the approach to multidisciplinary focus groups.
